Parent Network News

Last Friday 1 May over 400 people gathered in the Tiverton Campus Gymnasium for our second annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. It was a SELL OUT. It was fantastic to see so many students with their mums and grandmothers, joined by College staff, to enjoy a buffet breakfast and meet with other mums and students. Thank you to all who attended.

Everyone was treated to the sound of some very talented De La Salle musicians. Addison Rowland played his acoustic guitar as everyone gathered and ate breakfast. To close the breakfast, the Senior Flute Ensemble that included Raphael Canty, Justin Lack, Ben Northey, and Dong Ye (with teacher Ms Kelly Williams) played for us. Thank you to all the musicians for being part of the celebrations.

During the breakfast we heard from School Captain Elliot Fabris, whose very thoughtful speech outlined the all encompassing role of a mum. Elliot also spoke of his appreciation for his mum, Debra; for all that she does for him. Well done Elliot! Thank you also to the following Student Leaders for their involvement in the breakfast proceedings: Jack Fogarty and Connor Rate for MC’ing the event; and Daniel Byrden and Connor for sharing the opening prayer and saying Grace.

Principal Peter Houlihan featured to share some of his own mother’s wisdoms on parenting and what it was like bringing up a teenage boy in the ‘70s. It turns out that even Mr Houlihan was not a perfect teenager!

Carrying on the theme of mums and teenage boys, we were very fortunate to have the College Counsellors Karina Dubroja and Maree Keel as our guest speakers. They spoke on the topic of the changing nature of the mother-son relationship across the developmental stages. It was also a great opportunity for mums to be able to meet Karina and Maree and be informed of the counselling services available at the College.

The Parent Network is very grateful to everyone that supported this year’s Mother’s Day Breakfast. A very big thank you to the many people who helped with the set-up, running and clean-up of the breakfast. They include: the Car family, Cate Robertson, Lina Agius, Annette Cossari, Lora Domine, Jenni Rogan, Ann Lagreca, Caroline and Mia Gojak, Louisa Salmon, Marg O’Dwyer, Mary Martin, Helen Groves, Eric Quitt, Michael Urban, Rob Pettit, John Kinsgley, Tony Misquitta, Simon Schweigert, Rohan Bacon, Adam Rowland, Chris Scott, Terri Drum, Susan Van Dyk, Liz Scott, Karen Trewella, Nevia Krizman, Liza and Albert Zago, Trish Van Buynder.

Also, much gratitude goes out to the enormous generosity of the College families who donated items towards the breakfast. Thank you to Dahlia and Joe Leuzzi, who donated the beautiful roses that dressed each table at the breakfast. Each student was able to give to their mum a rose. Thank you also to Maria Squires for the donation of all the beautiful fresh fruits enjoyed by all.

The Parent Network would also like to acknowledge the wonderful support from the College to hold such a special event. Special mention to Trish Woodman, Leah Hartmann, Michael Bohan and his maintenance team, and the College’s resident photographer, Jonathan Hewett.

Editor’s note: A special thank you to the wonderful Julie Car, who went above and beyond to make this event happen for the second year in a row. We all appreciate your effort Julie!
