Chaplain’s Notes

Retreat Day

On Wednesday 16 August the Confirmation candidates and all Grade 6 students spent the day on a Retreat outing where they had the opportunity to learn more about the wider church and the many different ways that people serve God. Commencing with a visit to St Francis (the oldest church in Victoria) students attended the Sacrament of Reconciliation and then lit candles in the Lady Chapel for those they love. From there the group went to visit the Sisters of Charity (Mother Teresa’s Sisters) who have a refuge for women and children in crises and also a special centre where they feed people who are homeless. Sister Jovia taught the students a hymn celebrating the constant presence of God’s love in their lives. She spoke about the inspiration Mother Teresa derived from her own mother; as Year 7 student, Kyle Loughnan put it, “she taught her to be generous to the poor, even when she had little to give”.

St Patrick’s Cathedral was an adventure where the students, through means of a quiz booklet, learnt about the detail in the Cathedral and the history of the Melbourne church. After lunch, it was on to Kew and the Carmelite Sisters, a Monastic Order. Our young men were impressed with the joy and happiness of these women whose vocation is to prayer. They were also grateful for the hospitality of lemonade and biscuits!

Our last stop for the day was St Anthony’s Shrine in Hawthorn. This Church was built by the Italian migrants who came to Australia after WW11. With a very European feel, it displays many Saints in paintings, stained glass windows and statues. It was fun for the boys to search out the Saint they had chosen as their Confirmation patron. Father Robert spoke with the boys and completed our visits with prayer and a special blessing.

Monday 4 September
there will be a Family Mass and presentation of Confirmation Medals. Don’t forget to bring a plate for supper. Please ensure this date is in your diary.

Students will also travel to St Anthony’s on Thursday 7 September, to meet Bishop Elliott prior to the big event.

The Sacrament will be celebrated on Sunday 10 September, 11:00am Mass at St Anthony’s Parish, Cnr Grange and Neerim Roads, Glen Huntly.

Please keep these students in your prayers as they strive to grow closer to the Lord.
