De La Salle College Board announcement

It is with great excitement and immense confidence that the College Board announces the appointment, in its one-hundred-and-first year, of the first lay Principal at De La Salle College, Malvern, to take up the role at the start of the school year 2014.

Mr Peter Houlihan, 49, a former Year 12 Co-ordinator and Curriculum Co-ordinator at the College fifteen years ago, comes with outstanding credentials and broad experience from his more than twenty-five years as a professional teacher and leader in boys’ education.

Peter leaves the position as Assistant Principal at Marcellin College, Bulleen with the best wishes of Principal Mark Murphy and the leadership team.

The Chair of the College Board, Br Chris Gorringe fsc, said Peter identified strongly with De La’s promise for its students to ‘live and lead’.

Peter made clear he sees his role primarily as faith leader: “Whilst I have great affinity with the Lasallian tradition and a firm commitment to lifelong learning, I see the primary role of Principal as the school’s faith leader,” he said.

Peter’s career in boys’ education began at CBC, St Kilda prior to his first 4 year stint at De La, where, in addition to his Year 12 role, he led a curriculum review and restructure.

From there, in 2001, he had the unique opportunity to join the staff at the renowned, co-educational day and boarding school in the British tradition in Brunei, Jerudong International, where high expectations and correspondingly high results continue to be achieved by high-quality staff attracted from across the globe.

Returning to Australia at the end of 2005, Peter has spent the last seven and a half years at Marcellin where, as Assistant Principal — Teaching and Learning, he built strong relationships with the boys, their families and staff across the campus while continuing to teach as well as coach sport.

Peter has been commended as collaborative and consultative as well as decisive and able to make the tough decisions.

Married with two daughters, 21 and 19, Peter is looking forward eagerly to returning to De La Salle Malvern: “I feel hugely privileged to be appointed first lay Principal at such a fine school, one with such a fine record and such high academic results.”

I have already made arrangements to spend as much time as possible at Malvern over the remainder of 2013,” Peter concluded.

Acting Principal
Br Chris Gorringe also took the opportunity to announce the appointment of Brendan Ellis, a veteran in boys’ education from Xavier College, Kew, as Acting Principal for the remainder of this year.

Brendan has been involved in education all his professional life, mostly at Xavier, but also at tertiary level in Melbourne as well as a period teaching at the Lycée Colbert in Paris while completing additional qualifications at the Sorbonne University.

Joining Xavier College in 1976, Brendan was the first lay person appointed Head of Senior Campus, from where he retired in 2009.

Brendan will take up the Acting Principal role at the start of Term 3 2013.

Br Paul Rogers
The College Board takes this opportunity to once again express its appreciation to Br Paul who will conclude his term as Principal at the end of Term 2 and to wish him well in his future ministry.
