Athletics Carnival 2014
Our annual Home Room Athletics Carnival was last on Friday, 7 March at Duncan Mackinnon Athletics Track. On an overcast day, the conditions proved to be ideal as the temperature was conducive to high participation rates amongst the wide variety of events offered at the Carnival.
With impressive student attendance and strong home room enthusiasm, the atmosphere at the Carnival all day was one of fun combined with friendly rivalry between students to earn maximum points towards their home room success.
In what has now become a great tradition of our De La Salle Athletics Carnival, Mr Hogan and his Home Room class provide a sausage sizzle and drinks for everyone and all money raised goes towards our MAD fund and the Coolies Trip to India. With a huge total being netted, over $2,000 has gone to MAD and Coolies. As well as this significant amount of money being raised for these key De La Salle charities, the BBQ stall really adds to the collegial atmosphere of the Carnival. Massive thanks goes to Mr Hogan and his Year 12 Hegarty students for all of their preparation to organise the stall and then to provide food and drinks for over 1000 hungry and thirsty customers!
By the end of the Carnival, after 182 events, the 2014 Home Room Champions were as follows:
Year 7 Hegarty and Mr Paul Fegan
Year 8 Jerome and Mr Ken Stokes
Year 9 Miguel and Mr Peppe DiCiccio
Year 10 Vincent and Mr Michael Watty
Year 11 Roland and Mr Rob Hoich
Year 12 Hegarty and Mr Tim Hogan
There were many fine individual performances at the Carnival with many boys winning multiple events in both track and field disciplines. The 2014 Year Level Champions will be announced at an upcoming Assembly and medals presented to boys from Year 4 – 12.
We hope that the positive vibe from both students and staff at our first major sporting carnival of the year will be repeated at the other sporting events still to come throughout the remainder of 2014.
Having seen all of the athletic talent at DLS on show, we now continue the task of attempting to assemble our best possible Athletics Team to represent the College at the ACC Athletics Carnival on Wednesday, 2 April at Albert Park. Training began back at the beginning of Term 1 and it is crucial that all squad members increase their commitment and determination to be selected in our 2014 De La Salle Athletics Team as we strive to really make an impact upon our return to Division 1 ACC Athletics.
