Year 8 Maths Lesson with Peter Sullivan (Monash University)
On Thursday 20 November De La Salle College welcomed Peter Sullivan, along with teachers from other schools and staff from the Catholic Education Office, Melbourne. Peter is a Professor of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education at Monash University and has extensive experience in research and teaching in teacher education.
He ran a lesson with 8 Hegarty on linear equations which was observed and discussed by Mathematics teachers at De La Salle College and teachers from Sacred Heart College Oakleigh, Killester College, CBC St Kilda and Assumption College.
This lesson was different from a ‘typical Maths lesson’ and the teachers found it very helpful to watch. The boys had to work through a challenging task and learn from each other, developing their own strategies rather than relying on the teacher and a set procedure. The response from the boys in 8 Hegarty was fantastic and Peter has been in touch to say how impressed he was with their level of reasoning and enthusiasm in sharing their work. Thank you to 8 Hegarty and Ms Ryan for allowing us to interrupt their day.
