Chaplain’s Notes

Founder’s Day

Each year the entire College Community gathers for Eucharist as the starting point for a day of celebration. This year our focus was on Lasallian role models and mentors. Our sacred space was decorated with long banners acclaiming the gifts of the saints after which the College Homerooms are named. Our Year 10 Art students produced portraits of these saints, which they carried forward in procession and placed as a backdrop to the altar.

Father John Sherman celebrated the Mass and in his inimitable way he drew together all the threads whilst inviting our young men to fully engage in the moment.

The College musicians and choristers excelled with their renditions that led us even deeper into a prayerful meditation on our sister and brotherhood as Lasallians.

A special moment for us all was the address by past student Ilia Roytberg (2012). Ilia spoke to the students about his experience in Year 9, saying that on the one hand he was a scallywag, but when he did Lasallian Service he felt transformed. Ilia said “I really encourage you to use this [Lasallian Service] week for self-reflection and growth. Choose a place you enjoy, but also one that will challenge you”. He told the students: “It’s all too easy to go somewhere, be bored or muck around for a week, and come back having stood still, while others have moved forward.” Ilia urged the students to make the most of any opportunity for self-development that allowed them insights into the lives of those less fortunate. Ilia went to Papua New Guinea during Year 11, another life changing experience. In his first year after leaving the College he joined a Lasallian team in Argentina where he worked at an orphanage.

We were all blessed to also have the presence of four Lasallian Brothers from the Malvern Community join us.
