Sport News

Term 1 senior weekly sport is approaching the start of finals, with most senior teams well placed in the final rounds to qualify.

Our Senior 1st XI Cricket Team will need to win their remaining two games to qualify straight into a final. There has been some exceptional performances already this season but none better than the innings made by Year 11 student Will Taylor. Will batted at number five in our last round against Salesian College and made an unbeaten score of 101 off 80 balls. To score a century in any grade of cricket is a great achievement but to do so in a 35 over ACC fixture is very rare indeed.

Unfortunately our Second XI are out of finals contention but remain positive and are looking to be as competitive as possible during the last rounds of fixtures. Some of the Year 11 boys have showed that they will push for selection in the 1st XI in 2016 and we look forward to their continued contribution. Both our senior tennis teams and senior volleyball teams remain in the race for finals and we wish them well in the last two weeks of fixtures.

ACC Swimming Carnival

Our ACC Swimming Squad performed exceptionally well in the recent ACC Swim Championships. Our strongest age groups were our Under 13, Under 14 and Under 15 which augurs well for the future of swimming at the college.

ACC Athletics Carnival

Lastly, we look forward to our ACC Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 25 March at Lakeside Stadium. The spirit at training has been exceptional this year and the boys have been working hard on their respective events. I have been particularly impressed by our senior athletes who have mentored and coached a number of younger students. Daniel Byrden and Will Mackie in Year 12 have been working with our distance runners to great effect, Zac Hellyer has helped significantly in coaching the jumpers in the squad and College Leader Liam Bisognan has showed great leadership when working with the sprinters. It will certainly be a hard decision when selecting a captain in the lead up to the event. It is a pleasure to see these young men display such great examples of leadership to the younger students and hopefully this will continue to grow the spirit within the squad.

Next newsletter I will outline for parents and the College community a summary of the opportunities presented to students in the upcoming Term 2 winter season.

Student achievements

Connor Franes, Year 7, scored the trophy for 3rd place in the 2015 Chess Victoria Age-Group Rapid Chess Championship held yesterday for the 12 year old category. After a shaky start, his twin brother Spencer came equal 5th on points, but after a complex tiebreaking system, ended up in 9th place – a great achievement. The official Chess Victoria results are available here.

Kristoff Soliven was runner up in the Central Victorian Junior Golf Masters Under 16 Division gross score. It was a two day event at Bendigo’s Neangar Park Golf Club.

Congratulations also to Patrick Hounihan, Year 11, who won the Box Hill Junior Open Golf Tournament (Stableford) with a score of 41 points.
