Year 10 History excursion to the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick
Year 10 History students recently visited the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick as part of their study of WW2. It was a great opportunity to hear a story first hand from a survivor, Gary, who at age 14 was taken to a forced labour camp. Gary attributes his survival to good hygiene, avoiding disease and infection by keeping as clean and healthy as possible. Students had a chance to view the exhibits in the museum and discuss the three solutions put in place by the NAZI regime that aimed to remove Jewish people from Europe. It was a sobering occasion, highlighting how simple words of hatred can lead to the death of millions. Unfortunately very soon these stories will only exist on recordings and the boys were very lucky to experience the impact of hearing these events from one of a few lasting survivors.

Stonnington ChessKids Chess Tournament
A tournament of minds was held at De La Salle on Wednesday 17 May. Two Kinnoull teams and two Tiverton teams participated.
Our students struck their best thinking poses and battled to produce an impressive result. The Kinnoull A Team placed second behind Mazenod College, and the Kinnoull B Team placed fourth. Our top player of the day was Kinnoull A Team member Michael Collier (11, AUS01), who finished fifth with 5.5 wins.
The Tiverton A and B Teams finished fifth and eighth respectively. The top player for the Tiverton A Team was Daniel Pertile (8 Vincent), who finished thirteenth with 5 wins. The top player for the Tiverton B Team was Kurt Abeyesekera (7 Roland), who placed twenty‐fifth with 4 wins.
Our thanks to ChessKids for organising. The College will be hosting a Tiverton House Chess tournament on Monday 29 May in the PAC. Please see Mr Larry Evans for a permission form if you are interested in competing.
