Year 9 students — MAKE YOUR BED!
Last week, our Year 9 students were part of a study skills program led by Success Integrated. It may seem odd to discuss study skills in the middle of Term 3, but the timing could not have been better as now is the time for our students to dig deep. It is now, exhausted from the long winter and with few goals other than to make it to the end of the term, that students need to be challenged to begin making their plans and strategies for a successful end of year exam campaign.
The presenters engaged their audience with music, jokes, chants and challenging ideas and our students responded wholeheartedly. They accepted that ‘now’ is the time to begin working for the harvest (success in the exams). It is NOW that seeds need to be planted so that skills will grow and knowledge can blossom.
So what does this have to do with making your bed? The presenters ended with this clip — Change the World by Making Your Bed by Admiral William McRaven. While our camp in week four of Term 4 will not be as arduous as the SEAL training Admiral McRaven describes, it will develop resilience in our students. It will bring with it a sense of achievement, power and knowledge that they are innately ready for the challenges school and life brings.
After they have faced their daily challenges, if they have taken up Admiral McRaven’s advice, they will have a freshly made bed to rest in.
