First XVIII Match Report

Our first game of the new season was against St Joseph’s, a team who have certainly had the better of us in recent years. The focus of the team was to get away to a strong start by matching or exceeding our opponents’ effort and defensive pressure.

The first quarter was exactly how we planned with DLS jumping out of the blocks and dominating possession and inside forward 50 entries. Our 3.8 first quarter could easily have been 8.3 and more than likely closed them out of the game altogether.

To St Joseph’s credit, they dominated the opening of the second quarter and hit back to level the score early on. But we steadied and regained a three-goal lead at half time.

There was no doubt the players were encouraged by their first half and a growing sense of confidence was spreading through all the players. The third quarter was again a tight contest. Some excellent goals from a variety of snapshots and one on the run allowed us to maintain an 11-point lead going into the last quarter.

Having worked so hard, our players weren’t going to let this game go. Some very desperate and smart play throughout the quarter by everyone enabled us to extend our lead, and as the final siren sounded we had achieved an outstanding win.

Quick Stats

  • DLS. 11. 13. 79 d St Joseph’s 9. 7. 61

Second XVII Match Report

Unfortunately, the Second XVIII have gone down in a great game that was shrouded in controversy at the end. De La Salle were up by about 21 points at three-quarter time but only managed to kick one goal in the final quarter. Our goal umpire had Mazenod down for three but the Mazenod coaches had the final result as them winning by three points. Despite the result, the players were fabulous. Their effort was wholehearted for the entire duration of the match and they were bitterly disappointed with the result. Congratulations must go to the players and the coaching staff as the Second XVIII, despite the result have started the year really well.

Quick Stats

  • De La Salle 9. 9. 64 lost to Mazenod 9. 12. 67
  • Best: Reed, Lawless, Yates, Martinez, King.

The Di Medio family have a history of athletic achievement, and as the youngest of four brothers to attend De La Salle College, Andre Di Medio, Year 9, has faced a bar set high, quite literally!

Competing in the pole vault, Andre secured first place in the Under 16 boys category at the recent Victorian State Athletic Championships.

On 1 April, Andre followed that by achieving second place and a Silver medal in the National Athletic Championships in Sydney. Congratulations, Andre!
