Susan McLean is Australia's foremost expert in the area of cyber safety and young people. She was a member of Victoria Police for 27 years and in 1994 took her first report of cyberbullying involving a group of Year 8 school girls. From this case, she identified the emerging problem of internet harassment. She continued in the police force for many years, researching and training at the highest international level, ultimately establishing the organisation's approach to child online safety. Susan was a guest at the College and spoke to both students and parents alike in two engaging presentations at the beginning of Term 2.

Her comments are very relevant for all students:
  • Remember to think before posting online and think about the 3 R’s – Respect, Responsibility and Reputation.
  • Nothing can truly be deleted and nothing is anonymous online, it always leaves a digital footprint. Certain posts and comments can be found years later.
  • Don’t accept bad behavior by friends online. Don’t be silent, call out dangerous and dumb behavior online.
  • Students under the age of 13 shouldn’t be on social media accounts. If you are, it is a criminal act and cyberbullying is a criminal offence from the age of 10.
  • Students should block and delete offensive material, or save and store the material if it directly relates to you.
  • Always report abuse.
As part of our GROW program, we are teaching De La Salle students to make good choices, be kind and be brave, and being online is no different.
