Holy Eucharist Campus
Year 9

Marvellous Melbourne turned on the weather for the first of the 2021 City Learning Days for our Year 9 students. As part of a curriculum program that focuses on independence and self-directed learning, several days each year are spent using the city as our classroom to further explore concepts covered at Holy Eucharist.

On Wednesday 28 April the focus was on Stewardship and how our care for the land and others, has changed over time. Students visited Hosier Lane and the Ian Potter Centre (NGV) taking in both contemporary and classic Australian artworks to identify how man has interacted with the environment over time. The ever-changing façade of Hosier Lane provides the perfect backdrop to consider the traditional owners of the land and the many changes the city has seen.

Students also had the privilege of having a private booking at the Eureka Skydeck where geographical concepts and physical changes to the land and our city’s spaces could be viewed. From there it was time for students to plan, strategise and race for points as they participated in the Great Melbourne Race - taking off from the Eureka Skydeck, exploring iconic Melbourne landmarks before crossing the finish line at Federation Square. Working in small groups, the race allowed students the freedom to explore, make mistakes, take some wrong turns but ultimately celebrate success at the race’s conclusion - modelling the growth mindset we encourage at Holy Eucharist every day.

Plans are already well underway for our next City Learning Day and we look forward to exploring more of what the city has to offer us early in Term 3.
