The Principal's Report

I’m working on the assumption that everybody has heard, read and spoken enough about COVID-19 this week (this year?). In my work as Principal and in my personal life, I am determined to move beyond worrying or complaining and focus my energy on looking forward. Surely things will get better sooner rather than later, and the everyday frustrations and disappointments will soon fade into the past.

In my leadership roles in Catholic schools, I often look to the charism and our Founder for inspiration. While St John Baptist de La Salle died over 300 years ago, gentle advice on how to better cope with the daily challenges is everywhere in his teachings.

As we find ourselves returning to lockdowns, this space of the unknown, as Lasallians we remember to enter in a spirit of patience and trust. So today we pray that God remains present with us and that our hearts and those of our colleagues and families, are opened to the realities that are unfolding before us.

And like St John Baptist de La Salle, in a time of uncertainty, we Lasallians find within us a deep faith, zeal for God and trust for better days that await us. I am finding it uplifting and comforting to promote a more positive culture and outlook. Staff and students alike are more susceptible to stress the further they look ahead, searching for answers and surety which simply aren’t there. My advice is to live in the moment, plan the week ahead to deal with what you can, rather than worrying about things beyond our control.

Our staff have certainly spent a good deal of time and effort in recent weeks working on the soundest methods to deliver the best learning and wellbeing to all our students. As you are all well aware, there are so many variables, so many views and so many considerations – rest assured everyone at De La Salle is doing their best and we will come out of this well by supporting each other. The many positive emails from parents have been a wonderful boost for tired staff and help us carry on with hope and optimism, grateful for the terrific community we work in; thank you.
