Learning and Teaching

In navigating the shifting sands of lockdown, there is much to feel good about. There have been countless instances of struggle, tension, anxiety and difficulty for our community, as has been the case for many if not all Victorians of late. The achievement of maintaining a quality education for our students becomes an increasingly remarkable feat as time goes on. The challenges for teachers in re-creating their work to suit remote learning are immense.

I continue to be humbled by the energy, creativity and determination of our teachers in seeking to do the very best they can for their students. Our students have also shown so much resilience throughout the past few weeks. For some, the singular focus of remote learning has enabled them to expand and extend what they are capable of in extraordinary ways. For others, just maintaining connection with staff and peers has been difficult at times, but such an important thing to be able to do.

In this climate, the key message to staff this week has been to be gentle. Gentle with students who may be having a tough time of it. Gentle in terms of the expectations they may have in what can and can’t be achieved within the current context. Gentle with themselves in managing so valiantly the demands of work and home life through lockdown. I would like to extend this sentiment to families too. Being gentle with one another is an expression of love at this time when it is so very much needed, understanding that this time will pass, and the sharing of a gentle act or word is a gift that helps to bring healing and life to all those around us.
