Australia Reads - De La Salle Reads!

At De La Salle we promote reading as a habit with your son. We encourage him to choose something he likes and we try to make time for him to read.

Making time! That is always a problem. It is the key to breaking into a book far enough that you want to continue. With this in mind we have decided to take part in a national initiative Australia Reads! on Thursday 16 September. This is a collaboration between authors, booksellers, libraries and publishers, born of a common passion for, and mutual interest in, championing reading, promoting the many mental health and lifestyle benefits of reading books.

What better time than Lockdown to launch the inaugural Australia Reads! De La Salle Reads! event. The idea is that readers take an hour out to read on one day. An hour requires concentration, so we have broken it up. On Thursday 16 September, Tiverton teachers will take time out of classes to encourage students to read.

On this day students will be asked to read:
  • 20 minutes during Period 2 GROW Wellbeing period
  • 20 minutes after lunch – this is usually ACC immersion time (we will need your assistance here!)…and
  • 20 minutes before bed.
If your son has nothing at home to read we can look at his past reading and make recommendations. Send us an email. Local libraries are doing Click and Collect and De La Salle library provides eBooks. Also for students in our Literacy Support program, the College provides eAudio Books which can be downloaded onto their phone via an app.

We are already excited to think about all those reading hours!
