The Principal's Report

Recent media reports around boys’ schools and the culture therein have once again generated discussion and analysis here at Malvern. While we would not enter into painting ourselves and our student body as perfect and projecting an image of a College without risk of blemish, we are proud of the progress De La Salle has made in this critical space.

The initiation this year of the GROW Program (Growing Responsibility for your Own Wellbeing) and its development over the course of the year has had myriad benefits. In addition to providing terrific support to students in lockdown through its relevant and engaging sessions each week, GROW tackles contemporary issues confronting our young men in 2021.

Operating under the steadfast conviction, we have an obligation and imperative to educate our students around critical issues including misogyny, sexism and homophobia. Our staff design, write and deliver age-appropriate programs in these spaces and we also engage external agencies such as Elephant Ed to support us with their expert input. GROW informs and challenges our students on topics such as consent, privilege, culture and diversity.

While these are current issues, addressing them ties in neatly with the traditional Lasallian values of respect for all persons, an inclusive community and social justice. While there has been and there will be exceptions, De La Salle students and staff are proud to defy the sometimes negative stereotype of boys’ schools.

The 178 Year 12s leaving us after their exams and final Celebration Day next Thursday are living proof of this. As in the past 108 years, the College is very proud of the graduating cohort as they walk out the gates into the wide world as the respectful, responsible, quality young men we’d hoped they become.
