The Principal's Report

As we approach the end of another rather tumultuous year, I would like to thank all our families for their support as we navigated the four lockdowns and the other months of onsite learning. It was critical for staff, students and parents to work together in partnership during the challenges of 2021, which I am proud to say we did to great effect.

At our End of Year Mass and Assembly last Thursday, the students’ standards of respect and cooperation during a very warm 75 minutes were exemplary. In my final address for the year, I spoke to students about how remote learning taught them a great deal about independence, organisation, self-discipline and taking responsibility for their own learning. These skills and attitudes will be a big help as they navigate 2022.

I have already spoken and written a great deal about the challenges of 2021 and the impact of COVID-19 on our school year. Let’s not dwell on that now, it’s better to put it behind us and look forward as we head off into the holidays.

However, it is appropriate to recognise the many positives which did come out of our periods of remote learning this year. While it was a battle at times for all of us, students and staff alike, it did bring out the best in a lot of people and demonstrated just what a wonderful school environment we are fortunate to be a part of.

One of the great features of Catholic education and indeed the Lasallian charism is care and concern for each other, the principle of service and capacity to recognise when someone is in need – then doing something about it.

The level of care and concern demonstrated by staff when students were struggling with academic progress, IT issues, isolation, wellbeing or mental health concerns was outstanding. In a similar vein, I know many students – at all Year Levels - went out of their way to support each other, stay connected and remain positive.

As we travel through the season of Advent and Christmas approaches, may we use the themes of this special time of year as inspiration for a vision of honesty, justice, participation and hope – all the good things about Christmas!

Wishing all our De La Salle College families a Holy, happy and safe Christmas.
