Sports Report

ACC sports has come around quicker than ever with De La Salle taking on Xavier College on 24 January in a friendly cricket match. On a hot and sunny morning, Tom Childs (First XI Captain) won the toss and decided to bowl first to utilise the soft Xavier College pitch. Tom and Jack Ryan bowled superbly in the first few overs to have both Xavier openers back in the pavilion. After 6 overs Xavier were 2/18. After this however, Xavier’s depth and class came to the fore. The third wicket resulted in a 81 run stand.

After the 18 over drinks break, the real De La Salle spirit kicked in and managed to then take 5/42 to have the Xavier boys reeling at 8/141. This was significant, as the bowling and fielding improved in the heat to such an extent that two superb run outs and tight bowling were able to restrict Xavier to 184 off 45 overs. The best bowler for the day was Jack Ryan with 3/31 off 9 overs but was ably supported by Lucas McNamara (3/33 off 7 overs) and Tom Childs (2/27 off his maximum 10 overs).

The De La Salle batting innings started solidly with Luke Healy. He quickly raced to 14 off 7 balls but kept losing partners at the other end and De La Salle quickly found themselves in trouble at 3/22. A solid, and quick-fire 38 run stand between Healy and Daniel Curnow (22) looked to have tipped the scales in favour of an unlikely De La Salle victory. However, a sharp chance by the Xavier wicketkeeper ended Luke Healy’s entertaining knock of 35 and unfortunately for De La Salle, we kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite some late theatrics from Sam Cross (31*) and Dylan Carver (10), De La Salle were bowled out for 118, losing the game by 66 runs.

The Second XI went to Whitefriars on the 2/2 with Coach James Gigacz where they were unfortunately beaten.

Best performers were:
Anthony Liakakos (37 Runs)
Angus Kenny (0/30 off 4.0 0vers)
