THE DUCE NEWSLETTER ISSUE 15

14 OCTOBER 2021

From the Archives

In this edition of The Duce I wanted to highlight the rich history in choral singing (and music making in general) the College has had since its foundation.

The first photo, from 1913 is titled the “De La Salle” Boys Surplice Choir, Malvern 1913. The term “surplice” refers to the white tunics which have been part of the tradition of Christian church singing since the mid-Middle Ages and has continued to today. I will be trying to get some more information about the members of the choir, and the choir masters / priests who are also in the photo.

The second photo is from the mid-1980s with Mrs Andrea Savage as conductor. The photo has some names on the back, but sadly at some time in its history, the photo has been cropped and names of the back row of boys is missing. If you are in this photo, or know of any of the members of the choir at this time, could you please let me know via email archivist@delasalle.vic.edu.au so I can develop the story of this choir. At the time the College often entered the Dandenong Eisteddfod – clearly this particular year they won their section based on the large trophy being held.

If you are an Old Collegian or former staff member, and have information to divulge, questions to ask, or donations of school memorabilia to make, please do not hesitate to contact me on the above email. I look forward to meeting more of you into the future.
