Biometric Practical at Holy Eucharist Campus

The subject of Ingenuity at Year 9 combines Mathematics, Science and Technology.

During Term 1, under the ribbon of Identity, classes explore the science, mathematics and technology of biometrics. The technology of biometrics is used in our everyday lives, each time you use your thumb print or Face ID to access your phone, you are using biometrics.

Recently, Year 9 classes performed a practical looking at different techniques of fingerprinting. They first tried the classic technique of dusting using calcium carbonate. There was a range of successful print taking and for some a slight level of frustration as they needed to try several times to obtain a decent print.

The second technique is called fuming. This technique required students to put a single print on a glass slide and then place this slide into a sealed canister. The teacher then added a few drops of super glue into the canister before it was placed into a warm water bath. As the super glue heated it emitted fumes which reacted with the chemicals from the students’ fingers. Some highly detailed fingerprints were obtained.

The class then analysed the results to see if the types of patterns on their fingers matched the levels in the general population. Did you know, only 5% of the population have a finger print character trait of arches. Also, the characteristics of fingerprints tend to run in families.
