Year 7 Scientists up to Fishy Business

Year 7s eagerly embraced being back in the labs for practicals after lockdown. Here we can see them discovering the features and importance of fish.

Sometimes we take fish for granted when we go to the fish and chip shop. However, not these budding young zoologists!. They were keen to work in their groups to look more closely at the external anatomical features (outside body parts) of fish. The external features can also tell us a lot about a species - where it lives in the water, how it finds food, and how it protects itself from predators. A lucky pair of students found fish eggs upon dissection!

The unit’s focus was on ‘sorting out living things’ so this practical also helped them identify which type of animal it was. Breaking it down into being a member of the Animal Kingdom and secondly into Phylum Chordata. They compared this fish with a squid and prawn. The latter two were teacher dissection demonstrations. All was made possible by our helpful science laboratory staff, thank you.
