From the Archives

I was going through a box of rare books before the Easter break and came across Everyday Knowledge in Pictures which had been given by Br Jerome to OC John Gill in 1945 for coming 1st Place in Matriculation class – Chemistry. It is one item in a box which was donated to the College by Mr Gill. It is a wonderful book which explains in detailed, easy to read text, about all sorts of “modern inventions” such as the suction vacuum cleaner, air-conditioning and refrigeration motors, how a tube railway works, and my favourites – how your “Radio Set works” and how your Gramophone Records are made.

The book contains illustrations which are wonderful “industrial artworks” in their own right, along with photographs and diagrams. Have a look through the contents page to see the full list of items in this text. The second last chapter on how your “Radio Set works” reminded me that in the display case outside the Tiverton Library is a valve radio which is missing its back cover, giving us a fantastic view of the inside electronics.

Next time you are visiting the Tiverton Campus, swing past the display case and inspect the detailed inner workings of this wonderful old object. The book is on display in the archives room, so feel free to drop by any Tuesday or Wednesday during the school Term to visit me.
