Changes to Senior Secondary Education

Victoria’s senior secondary education is changing. From 2023, there’ll be two ways to obtain the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Students can choose to enrol in VCE or the VCE Vocational Major. This means the VCE will recognise different students equally.

The VCE, which can be completed as scored (the student will receive Study Scores and ATAR) or unscored (the student will not receive Study Scores or ATAR), opens pathways to university, higher-level TAFE or VET certificate courses, apprenticeships, traineeships and the workforce.

The VCE Vocational Major is a new 2 year applied learning pathway within the VCE that will replace Senior and Intermediate VCAL from 2023. The VCE Vocational Major will give students greater choice and flexibility to pursue their strengths and interests and develop the skills and capabilities needed to succeed in further education, work and life. It prepares students to move into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, university (via non-ATAR pathways) or directly into the workforce.

Students will now have more education choices, a higher-quality curriculum and better workplace experiences – preparing them for further study, training at TAFE or work. They’ll be able to use their talents in new ways under the new VCE.

Year 10 students will receive more information about the VCE pathways over the next few weeks as they embark on the subject selection process but until then, for more information, please see the following links:
