THE DUCE NEWSLETTER ISSUE 34

From the Archives

With the recent release of the 110 Years 110 Stories book, I was fascinated to read the wide variety of life pursuits our Old Collegians have followed over the years. I decided to look to our newspaper article collection for inspiration for this edition of The Duce and was not disappointed.

Whilst there was the occasional sad story, most were inspirational or thought provoking. This article below caught my eye as often “winning teams” are in the senior Year Levels at the College. This team of Year 10 students in 1993, were so creative in combining their Science and Drama learning and skills, that they won the inaugural Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria competition. The prize was $1000 of books for the school. They “produced an imaginative mime performance using masks and puppetry” about IVF and genetic engineering using “symbolic mime as the medium of presentation” (Blue and Gold 1993). (STEAM in action in 1993!)

The first round of judging was the submission of a video of their performance after 15 weeks of work. From there, they joined five other schools in the final performance evening in front of an audience. As the newspaper article points out, the students “learnt about team work, creativity, self-confidence and enthusiasm.”

Involved in this fabulous project were: Barry Reade, Timothy Murray, Christopher Britt, Andrew Harvey, Gavin Winbanks, Anthony Cavagna, Adam Valladaras, Thomas McAvaney, Matthew Loughman, Liam Ward, Benjamin Grogan and Daron Ransfield. Staff coaches were Leonie Rushbrook, Ross Prior and Glen Gravis.
