Identity and Mission 2023
This week marked the beginning of Lent, which started on Ash Wednesday, February 22.
A time that Christians prepare for the celebration of Easter. As Christians we believe that Easter celebrates the way in which Christ transformed the world and humanity. And we believe that we are called to continue to do the same, through our very actions, by showing more love, being more just, inclusive, compassionate, and forgiving.
Lent is a season in which we are asked to focus less on ourselves and more on others.
To be respectful of the other. To be inclusive of the other. To love the other. And to simply recognise that every encounter is a Christ encounter.
So, as we commence this Lenten journey I pray that these days we remember the journey Christ took in the desert and my prayer this Lent is a prayer for Lenten simplicity.
Let us remember we are in the holy presence of God…
Free us Lord from anything that obstructs our way to you.
Clear away the clutter of petty grudges and remove smudges of resentment and bitterness.
Cleanse us of thoughts filled with anger, envy, or self-pity.
Create space in our lives for more kindness and less spitefulness, greater generosity, and stronger compassion.
Enlarge our hearts with a spirit of gratitude this Lent, so that we may recognize the simple gifts that lay in abundance all around us.
