The Duce Primary

Primary Report

Quality Work
The theme for all Year 5 and 6 classes for the last four weeks of the school year is quality work. Throughout the Semester we have focused on students becoming more organised, completing set work in class and the twice weekly home learning schedule. Our focus now is on that work being of outstanding quality. We believe this will set all students up to transition well into next year.

Primary Camp

Primary students journeyed to The Ranch on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula at the end of October for our annual camp experience. Students undertook horse riding, giant swing, flying fox, initiatives and animal nursey activities in Year Level groups to keep building up those friendships that they have formed this year.

At night we watched a movie, had fun with a trivia and disco extravaganza and both nights the students went to bed at a reasonable time. Students had a great time and we all feel this will help with transition into 2023 with extra confidence and resilience.

Primary Vice Captain, Sully Jennings, said the following on the camp experience:

“This was my first ever camp due to it being cancelled two years in a row because of COVID-19.
My heart was pounding so much to the point where it was going to leave my chest. I reluctantly dragged my bag to the De La Salle Dome, where we were meeting before getting on the bus.
I kissed my mum and dad goodbye and waved until I couldn’t see them anymore. I was so scared.

Slowly, my friends started to arrive. They made me feel a lot safer. We gave our luggage to the bus driver and filed on to the bus. The bus drive was unexpectedly fun because Max had the genius idea to bring UNO cards on the bus. This kept us entertained throughout the whole ride.

When we arrived we went for a hike over the dunes but while we were hiking, dust flew in our eyes due to the crazy winds. After we had overcome that period of pain, we got to taste some of the native plants in the area. The plants had a strong taste of salt. We then had some lunch. Because of the special occasion, everyone’s lunch was filled with junk food. This made me very jealous because as always, my lunch was a home-made concoction containing vegetables and ham. From that moment forward, I knew that this would be a camp to remember…”

Year 6 Into Year 7 Transition

Students in Year 6 have undertaken two courses in Literacy and GROW classes to prepare them for Year 7 next year. All students participated in the Super Speak two day incursion in which students prepared speeches, focused on their public speaking and worked in groups in the hope to build up more confidence before next year.

Students also participated in the two session Step Up Transition Program coordinated by Stonnington Council. This incursion focused on how to meet new people, social awareness, dealing with anxiety, and having fun with transition. Many thanks to Rachel Collins and Sharon Bourke for supervising and organising these great experiences.

Primary Vice Captain, Lachie Newman, said the following:

“The amazing instructor Roshin from Super Speak was very kind and patient and would wait for the class and give helpful tips about our voice and posture. Session 1 was working on breathing techniques, mouth stretches, tongue twisters and posture. In Session 2 we split into two groups, we received sheets with the script on it and we chose our parts and performed funny and hilarious acts. Next Session we got into groups of three and we were given an object to talk about through a real or imaginative story, one was an exercise ball and weight lift. We learned so much and are very grateful to Roshin for making these fun activities to improve our speech."

Dendy Sports Competition

Students have been trialing for the T20 Cricket tournament on Friday 11 November at Duncan McKinnon Reserve. De La Salle will be taking four strong cricket teams to the competition and will be led by Andrew Kearns on the day. Consent 2 Go details have been sent to the 40 students who will be representing the College on the day.
The All Star Basketball students have had an incredible year winning both competitions they have entered so far. This team will be playing in the State basketball championships on Tuesday 22 November at Dandenong Basketball Stadium. Students will be training 5 - 6 times before the State championship. Many thanks to Paul Munslow for his help throughout the year.
