Occasionally I come across unusual objects in the boxes stored in our compactus, and this week I wanted to share the story of some glass bottles which were discovered on the Kinnoull campus during the Fairlight Archaeology Project in 2008, directed by OC David Hunter (2006).

“Fairlight” was the name of one of the original properties on the site of Kinnoull Campus.
In 1953, a clever move by a group of Old Boys, led by Frank Toohey, (who is now an Affiliated member of the Brothers), acquired Fairlight and then Kinnoull and so the school had an opportunity to grow even further. (from Principal’s address at the Centenary dinner in 2012 by Br Paul Rogers fsc)

The Br Adrian Fitzgerald Building (known better as the Chapel building on Kinnoull campus) is now built over this site. During the 2008 project, a number of items from the original building were uncovered including bricks, glass bottles (most broken), pottery and ironware left over from European occupation of the site for over 150 years at that time.

One of the glass bottles (pictured) was manufactured by Rowlands & Lewis Ballarat & Melbourne in 1889. The dints in the neck were innovative at the time, using a small glass marble and rubber seal to keep the carbonated drinks fresh. (More information HERE )

Unfortunately, all the bottles found were broken, but give an interesting insight into the everyday life of early Victorians living on the site of our school.
