Year 8 meets Author of Runner

First term is spent exploring the world of Squizzy Taylor and 1920s Richmond through the novel Runner, written by De La Salle old collegian, Robert Newton.
Robert Newton is an MFB Firefighter who has written many Young Adult novels. He has a strong message for students about reading and writing in general. It is powerful for the students to connect with the author and be able to ask him questions about how he got his ideas and what prompted him to write the setting and characters the way he did.

Here are some reflections from the students:

“I loved listening to what Robert Newton had to say about his stories and how he comes up with them. It’s really interesting how he became an author“
Aiden Bateman

“It was interesting to find out how he found his ideas, his style of writing and his thought processes”
Judd Pietsch

I learnt that Robert Newton’s first book was about his brother in High School, and how he struggled with dyslexia.”
Luca Dalal

“I learnt that it was true that Squizzy had kids running for him
Will Ellis

“I learnt that not all writers want to be writers when they are children…and that firefighters often have a second job.
Campbell Anderson
