Year 8 Runner Excursion

Last week Year 8 travelled to Richmond to walk around the setting of their class book Runner written by De La Salle old collegian Robert Newton.

The book is set in 1920s Richmond and focusses on Squizzy Taylor and the lives of the post war community. The walk took in Richmond Hill near St Ignatius Church, old factories and the old Temperance Hall.

About 13 km was covered down to the Cremorne factory district near the Bryant & May and Rosella factories. Students looked at streetscapes and imagined the days of the corner shop and the night man and lives where people walked or cycled to the factories to work. They had lunch in the park where the main characters played footy. Their task for the day was to take five photos of scenes which gave context to the story in the book. Cars were cropped out, filters were applied and great imagination was called upon as the modern Richmond streetscapes differ greatly from that represented in the book. The day was also an opportunity for the boys to demonstrate an ability to navigate their way home independently by public transport.
