“The key is not the will to win. Everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important.” –Bobby Knight

If a week is a long time in sport, then two weeks must seem like an eternity. Following up from the first round of ACC matches it has been all systems go at De La Salle College over the last two weeks. Not only have our Senior sides seasons continued with their fixtures but the college’s swimming, athletics and Year 7 and 8 sporting trials are also now up and running… its full steam ahead!

Some key dates include the ACC Athletics Championships this Thursday 23 February together with the ACC Swimming Championships at the end of Term on Wednesday 3 April. As outlined in the quote above from US College basketball coach Bobby Knight, preparing to win is paramount and I have been greatly impressed by the large number of students heading down to trainings to uncover their potential to see what unfolds! We wish them all the very best.

Results the last two rounds.

Round 2

Senior Cricket
De La Salle won the toss and sent St Bede’s in to bat on a soft, slow wicket. Opening bowler James McLisky bowled a superb 7-over spell taking 1 for 10 and was unlucky not to have taken more wickets given the number of times he beat the bat. Henry Docherty took 3/31, Jack Ryan 2/18 and Angus Kenny 1/21. Unfortunately, multiple chances were missed and this allowed St Bede’s to make 158 from their allotted 35 overs. We started the chase well and after 12 overs were right on target at 2/50. Captain Luke Healy was in fine form making 32 in quick time with several 4s and two 6s. However, the game changed dramatically, and the batting went downhill rapidly with De La Salle all out for 68 in the 22nd over.
- Final result -
DLS 10/67 def by St Bede’s 8/158.

Senior T20

Despite a week of review and training in preparation for the second game of the season, the Volleyballers experienced a tough day at the office.

Senior B DLS 0 sets 61 games defeated by Whitefriars 3 sets 75 games

Round 3

Senior Cricket
After a very long period of absence De La Salle Senior cricket returned to the MCG (Malvern Cricket Ground).

A grandstand full of students from Years 5 to 12, created a great atmosphere as De La Salle took to the field after St Bernard's elected to bat on a magnificent looking batting wicket. The crowd erupted as James McLisky took an early wicket, bowling the opener. From there it was hard work in the heat for bowlers and fieldsmen as the St Bernard's batsmen took advantage of the flat wicket and racked up a sizeable total of 4/195 after their 35 overs.

Undaunted, the De La Salle batsmen set about the task with composure, maturity and aggression. Luke Lloyd contributed a whirlwind 18 at the top of the order in an opening partnership of 43 off 8 overs. Fellow opener and captain, Luke Healy, continued batting brilliantly amassing 67 including five 4s and one six. He was well supported in several partnerships by the middle order. After a gallant chase, we finished on 7/170 just falling short of victory. The team did justice to the occasion of playing at the MCG and are to be congratulated on their performance, attitude and commitment.

Senior T20
The victories keep coming for the T20 side with a comfortable win over Emmanuel College.
- Final result -
De La Salle College 5/96 def Emmanuel 3/92.

Tennis
In what was a closely fought contest De La Salle came away with a strong victory. A great team performance.

Whilst the volleyball season is not progressing as one would like, the effort on behalf of both teams cannot be underestimated. They continue to put work in and hopefully the first win for the teams isn’t too far away! With the Senior B team contesting a very close match this week.
- Final results -
Senior A: De La Salle 0 sets 42 games def by Parade 3 sets 75 games
