"The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team." Phil Jackson, American basketball Coach.

Term 3 Sport has concluded, and we thank our Year 12 students for not only this term or this year’s efforts, but for all their participation over the many years spent at the College. Your willingness to compete and participate has been appreciated and you can take great pride in the legacy you leave behind. The quote above I hope encapsulates this idea where our teams rely on individuals, but the individuals take great strength from being part of our collective DLS team.

This term we had the ACC Cross Country Championships with some outstanding performances. The overall result saw DLS finish in 6th place from the 13 schools and maintain our position in Division 1. From my perspective, I would like to acknowledge the staff Mr Gigacz, Mr Shmerling and Mr McDonough who assisted at Cross Country training, along with our exceptional Head Coach Kev Mannix. Weekly training and this result can’t occur without them! It would also be important to give a shout out to Mr Murray and Mr Hogan for their tremendous encouragement; our athletes have been fortunate on Friday mornings arriving back at Kinnoull for a bacon and egg breakfast to end the week.

It's important to flag a few of the achievements. I won’t mention any Year 7’s as this was the first time they have competed. However, all the Year 7’s put in an outstanding effort in their first ACC Cross Country meet! Some of the boys who ran last year who improved their finishing place by over 20 places included:

Ned Hegan - 41st last year, 15th this year. Up 26 spots.
Xavier Brandham - 95th last year, 17th this year. Up 78 spots.
Xavier Tran - 70th last year, 49th this year. Up 21 spots.

This year we also had two top 10 finishers - Hugo Cornell (Captain) and Angus Emons (6th). Hugo led as Captain with our highest finishing place coming in 5th place, with the fastest time of the day for a De La Salle 5000m runner. His time of 18:08 minutes was 20 seconds faster than last year.

Moving away from cross country, Term 3 also saw other successful sporting competitions. Our Year 8 and Year 10 Basketball teams were defeated in close contests in semi final matches. Our Year 8 Hockey team were narrowly defeated in a Grand Final match against Parade 4-3, along with our Year 9 Hockey team going down 3-2 to Salesian in a tense Grand Final match. Whilst this holds the College in good stead looking ahead, this Term was outstanding for our Senior Hockey side. Having been strong performers throughout 2023, they had an exceptional season, undefeated and Champions in the Division 1 ACC Hockey competition. Congratulations to all the players who were led strongly by captain Bailey Hunter, Coach Georgie Skinner and Assistant coach Shaun Buckley.

As we approach Term 4 our focus now shifts to our Year 7 to 10 students who will be representing the College in cricket, tennis and volleyball. I have no doubt that they will give their best and we welcome the opportunity to compete and represent De La Salle College in the final term of the 2023 year!
