Sports Wrap Up

“Failures are the stairs we climb to reach success. Roy T Bennett

As Term 1 concludes we reflect on what has been accomplished in a busy first term. We had senior sport occurring with teams competing in cricket, tennis and volleyball. We have participated in lawn bowls and athletics championships and this week De La Salle College competed in the ACC Swimming Championships. We congratulate all students who represented the College this term and thank them for their efforts. At this time, I would like to also acknowledge our Swimming Captains Ryo Hayashi and Joshua Miles for their work throughout this term and particularly in the last few weeks leading into this major ACC event.

The quote this week comes from Roy T Bennett who is a positive mindset author. It resonates as I reflected on a presentation by Olympian Josh Beaver, who spoke to our Swimming Team on Monday morning. Josh spoke about how life will undoubtedly have setbacks and challenges. Josh shared how in 2015 he missed an automatic qualifying time by under 0.2 seconds to make the 2016 Olympic team. He spoke about overcoming injuries and how the greatest strength came from his own belief in him wanting to achieve his goals. He wasn’t the tallest, he didn’t have the biggest feet, he didn’t have the biggest hands, however what he could control was how hard he was going to work for his dream. Josh did eventually qualify for the 2016 Olympics and represented Australia in both the 100 and 200m backstroke events.

This week and early in Term 2, information will be circulated to students regarding ACC teams and places in the High Performance Sports Program. It is pleasing that all students that applied by the due date will have a place in the HPSP this year. Unfortunately, this is not the same with ACC teams. We are only able to field two ACC teams at each year level. As a result, some students will miss out on making the various team and squads. Once the last of the trials have been concluded, teams and squads will be emailed to successful students with fixture details and information relating to that team. Information will also be posted on the ACC Ollie Page to assist in disseminating and accessing this information. Those students who miss out on squads at these trials will still be able to participate in their other preferences for Immersion activities. The College is also looking at other options regarding internal sport options for students to maximise participation in sporting pursuits.

As the end of term approaches this also means that our Year 7 and 8 sports trials are also now almost over. Students have now rotated into the final sport allocation, and places in teams will be communicated in the next fortnight. The students have been excellent in giving maximum effort as they push for selection in the ACC teams to represent De La Salle College. This week our Year 10 and senior sides have been holding trials; with our Football & Soccer Teams having been on the track even earlier for Term 2 teams. The large student numbers have been pleasing to see and we wish all the students the best in their pursuits of representing the College.

Over the last fortnight, we have also seen our Lawn Bowls teams compete in the ACC Championships. We had a large contingent of Year 9 students representing the College and their enthusiasm, demonstrated by their huge numbers, will undoubtedly assist De La Salle in future years. My thanks to Head of Campus, Mr Alexander who assisted with trialling over 35 Year 9 students to select the lucky representatives who would make the team. On the day our best result came from our Year 11 team who finished second in the pool and lost to Emmanuel in their semi-final. De La Salle had two other teams competing strongly, but both were knocked out of consideration at the conclusion of the preliminary rounds.

Lastly can I remind student in Years 5 to 8 that applications for the College’s High Performance Sports Program are currently open. (See LINK here, a reminder that you will need to be logged into your student account to apply). Applications will no longer be available after Monday 27 March, so be sure to get your application in if you are keen to be considered.
