Prime Energy Drink
A new energy drink endorsed by popular YouTube stars is on sale at Woolworths for $4.50. Teenagers across Melbourne are lining up to get their hands on this drink called PRIME. This energy drink contains 200mg of caffeine per 355ml can – which is equivalent to 6 cans of Coke, 2.5 cans of Red Bull or three shots of coffee.
The maximum legal caffeine serving for energy and soft drinks in Australia is 96mg, however PRIME is able to market the energy drink via a loophole with a classification of being a ‘dietary supplement’.
Schools across Victoria (including De La Salle Health Centre) are starting to see presentations of students with heart palpitations, stomach upsets, jitteriness/hyperactivity, agitation and panic and complaining of insomnia after consuming these drinks. Please be aware of the side effects of these drinks our students are now consuming. Extreme side effects can include seizures, vomiting, tremors and psychosis.
