Primary Report
|
One of the key themes for learning at the Tiverton Campus is organisation. It is very important as it builds students’ ability to meet deadlines and reduces stress. Being organised allows all students to stay on top of tasks, proactively solve problems and ensures the production of quality work. We encourage all students to write their home learning tasks in their diaries, create a home learning timetable and regularly monitor OLLIE for due dates for all their various subjects. Please support our efforts by checking your child’s diary, timetable and OLLIE, and talking with your son about what he is working on.

Changes to Face Masks and Bell Times
|
Primary School students in Victoria are no longer required to wear masks at school. In Term 1, Primary students finished at 2:55pm as a precaution and to reduce congestion at major exit points at the College, including the tram stops. As the regulations have changed, we will revert to a 3:05pm finish for all our Tiverton students from Term 2 onwards.

Mission Action Day
|
Over $75,000 has been raised by the generous De La Salle community for our Mission Action Day. This money goes towards assisting our less fortunate Lasallian brothers and sisters locally and internationally. Primary students and families were amazing in their efforts to raise funds by selling crazy socks, guessing the amount of lollies in a jar, a huge chocolate Easter raffle, and assisting with the casual clothes, donut and drinks day. A special mention to Bas de Koning and his family, and Ella from Hair Body and Soul salon (part of the Sustainable Salons network located on Burke Road, Camberwell) for raising awareness and funds for MAD and also the Cancer Council Ponytail Project. Our 12km walk was a great way to finish Term 1 and showed all Primary students the power of social justice and working together for an important cause.

High Performance Sport - Basketball
Every Wednesday afternoon for seven weeks, 14 students will participate in the High Performance basketball program commencing in Week 2. We are pleased to announce the following experts who will encourage and support our students to improve their basketball skills:
|
- Nathan Jones – Personal trainer from NJ Fitness in Malvern for pre and post fitness sessions;
- Max Roberts – Under 12 Sandringham Sabres Basketball Coach for skills-based training;
- Russell Robertson – AFL Legend and Sandringham Sabres Basketball Coach will discuss how to prepare for elite sport, and
- Kevin Mannix – Owner of Running for Body and Soul will be assisting students to become better runners in basketball and other disciplines.

This program is now full, however, other High Performance programs in soccer, cricket, athletics, AFL and swimming are still taking places.

Excursions
|
|
|
|
Primary students will undertake the Planks Incursion in Periods 1 and 2 on Friday 6 May. The emphasis of this incursion is to develop students’ knowledge in Science and Technology. Students will be provided a series of building challenges and are encouraged to be creative, efficient and productive in their teams to achieve sustainable outcomes.
|
|
|
|
|
Year 6 students will also undertake a STEM incursion at the Tiverton PAC provided by Taskworks on Thursday 19 May. This STEM excursion is totally hands-on and the equipment is designed to offer students a chance to immerse themselves in mechanical, electrical and pneumatic design. It displays the basic operation of various machines as well as understanding Light and Sound. On the same day, all Year 5 students will journey into the city and undertake an indigenous walk and cultural tour as part of their Inquiry unit. More details to come for both of these learning experiences.

All Year 5 and 6 students are encouraged to undertake a range of lunchtime activities available on the Tiverton Campus. Some of these include:

Dendy Sports Competition
It has been very busy for Sport and Physical Education in the Primary School. Students participated in AFL trials at the end of Term 1 and we are looking forward to our five week competition against local Catholic Primary schools and the Lightning Premiership competition at Darling Park before the end of Term 2. Every student who expressed interested in this program will play at least one game for the College.

Students interested in soccer will have trials with Robin Lennon in the first few weeks of Term 2. Two teams will play at the Soccer Lightning Premiership at Caulfield Park on Wednesday 15 June.
|
Many thanks to Year 6 parents, Karen Griffiths and Natalie Cromer, who will coordinate four netball sessions for our Primary students this Term. At the end of the Term, we will form two netball teams (one in each Year Level) for the Netball Lightning Premiership at Duncan McKinnon Reserve.

To complete the year in Dendy Sports, Primary students will represent the College in Basketball Hoop Time at MSAC on Friday 5 August in Term 3 and T20 Cricket at Darling Park on Friday 11 November in Term 4. More details to come.

Welcome Rachel Collins
The De La Salle community was sad to farewell Laura Brough at the end of Term 1. She was a great asset to our Primary team. As we begin Term 2, we are very excited to introduce Rachel Collins to the Primary School team for 2022. Rachel has over twenty years’ experience teaching overseas in schools such as the Australian International School in Hong Kong and in these schools she has led numeracy and literacy teams. Rachel and her family recently returned to Australia and she is very excited to be joining De La Salle.

We welcome back Andrew Kearns to the College on a part-time basis. He will undertake Educational Support work on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in both Literacy and Numeracy classes. He will also assist with the Friday afternoon Dendy sports program.
|

Child Safety Reminders
- In line with our Child Safety Policy and safeguarding standards, all visitors to the College must report to the Tiverton Reception before entering the Tiverton Campus.
- If you wish to request a meeting with a classroom teacher or Director of Students, please email us to set up a meeting time.
- If students have any flu like symptoms, please immediately report this to your classroom mentor teacher. Please test and rest at home so all our students stay safe during this time.
- Students are to keep their mobile phones and i-watches in their lockers. If parents need to make contact with their son or his teacher throughout the day, please call the Tiverton Student Reception on 9508 2100.
