The Duce Primary (1)

Primary Report

Sovereign Hill
After an early start, students were ready to immerse themselves in a living museum at Sovereign Hill. The site is a historical replica of a 1800s town and provides a wealth of information about the Gold Rush and life in the Diggings. The icy weather and rain didn’t stop, giving a true indication of the harsh conditions the diggers faced. Undeterred by the mud, the students tramped around the village, enjoying the different shops, huts and cafes and learning about our history.

Activities included panning for gold and exploring the Main Street, especially the lolly shop! We watched a fascinating demonstration on gold pouring, with students realising how dangerous it was dealing with molten gold for the goldsmith. Students also walked deep underground in a mine shaft, witnessing the various ways gold was mined. One of the favourite activities was the lolly making demonstration. Students saw just how much sugar was used and taste tested them at the end. The Aboriginal Education session was invaluable. Students gained a great insight into how European settlement affected the Aboriginal way of life and how the Aboriginal population was devastated by disease and having their food supplies desecrated.

It was fantastic to be able to take the students on an excursion to Sovereign Hill. Student behaviour was exemplary and they are commended for participating in the day with enthusiasm and respect.

At 2:00pm, parents and students will join us in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) where the official Graduation Ceremony will commence. An afternoon tea and refreshments will be provided finishing around 3:30pm.

Elephant Ed

During GROW, Primary students undertook two weeks of classes with Elephant Ed on the subjects of body safety and puberty. 80% of the 70 students who were present gave this workshop a thumbs up, 78% of students want Elephant Ed to return to deliver more workshops and 83% of students found it useful having a young facilitator.

We will continue to work with Elephant Ed across all Year Levels to ensure our students are informed and engaged in these very important wellbeing topics.

Regional Basketball Championships

In Term 3, five teams competed in the Basketball Victoria Hoop Time tournament. Our All Stars and one of our Future Stars teams were successful on the day and have progressed to the regional championships. We will compete on Tuesday 11 October at MSAC and we will continue to train hard with our two successful teams.

VCAL and Physical Education

In the last week of Term 3, the Year 11 VCAL students coordinated a fun afternoon of games, including soccer, basketball, AFL and dodgeball for all Primary students. It was terrific to see the Primary students connect with older students and learn new skills and tricks. Many thanks to VCAL teacher, Cate McIlroy for establishing this initiative.

Infinite Cycles and Harold Holt Fitness Classes

Primary students have taken on a four week fitness challenge by undertaking spin, pump and body weight fitness classes at Harold Holt Swim Centre and Infinite Cycles Armadale. Students have walked to and from the venue, worked up a sweat in their classes, had lots of fun and represented the school well in the public domain. We are looking forward to completing these classes in Term 4 before undertaking lawn bowls, cricket, touch rugby and gaelic footy to finish off the year.
