The Principal's Report

Among the challenges and uncertainty of our extended lockdown I had the rare privilege last week to be refreshed and revitalised by interviewing six candidates for the position of 2022 College Captain. As I look for opportunities to promote hope and optimism these days, something to look forward to, these young men provided all of those.

Their written applications were most impressive in their maturity, ambition and common-sense approach to the leadership they offered. There was a visible awareness of their understanding and appreciation of the traditions of our 109-year-old College, with a tremendous capacity to weave in the Five Core Principles of a Lasallian education.

To hear 16 and 17-year-olds speak with such passion, enthusiasm and wisdom about the importance of respect was very encouraging. In their own manner, each was articulate and forthright about the critical need for young men to be better in matters of respect for women, misogyny and calling out inappropriate behaviour. They committed to leadership in this area and many other arenas, which will only impact positively on the environment around the three campuses next year.

All six of those shortlisted offered a variety of skills, leadership styles and plans for 2022. To be a strong and effective role-model, ensure the 2022 Year 12s leave a positive legacy and be a leader who earns and in turn, gives respect were common themes. Perhaps most impressive was the reference to Catholic and Lasallian values and the importance of grasping these and putting them into good effect in the execution of their roles. This has a significant influence on their ability to further grow as young men of character, compassion and empathy.

Congratulations to Peter Orlando, College Captain 2022, Sean MacNamara and Ralph Howard, Vice Captains. The other three candidates were also of excellent quality and will play pivotal roles in leadership positions at House level. I’m looking forward to 2022 and the many benefits we will see in student leadership.
