Year 9 Ingenuity

Plato once said, “Mathematics is an essential language and its knowledge to our understanding of everyday life.”

In Year 9, students had the unique experience of taking their own fingerprints. Fingerprinting provides a scientific and mathematical link to Term 1’s theme of Identity, which is woven through all Holy Eucharist Campus’ subjects.

The mathematics in the activity involved:
  • ensuring the water bath (used for heating super glue in a sealed container) was at the correct temperature,
  • measuring the time required for an adequate fuming of the fingerprints, and
  • delving into the statistical analysis of the class versus the general population in regard to the number of each different fingerprint characteristic.
Loops are found in 60% of the population, while whorls are found in 35% of the population. The rarest feature is arches which is found in 5% of the population.
