Year 9 Ingenuity
Plato once said, “Mathematics is an essential language and its knowledge to our understanding of everyday life.”
|
In Year 9, students had the unique experience of taking their own fingerprints. Fingerprinting provides a scientific and mathematical link to Term 1’s theme of Identity, which is woven through all Holy Eucharist Campus’ subjects.
|
The mathematics in the activity involved:
|
- ensuring the water bath (used for heating super glue in a sealed container) was at the correct temperature,
- measuring the time required for an adequate fuming of the fingerprints, and
- delving into the statistical analysis of the class versus the general population in regard to the number of each different fingerprint characteristic.
Loops are found in 60% of the population, while whorls are found in 35% of the population. The rarest feature is arches which is found in 5% of the population.
