Kinnoull Campus
Year 10 - 12

Our minds are constantly active, continuously thinking about the past, present or worrying about the future. Teenagers especially find it difficult to rest their busy minds, particularly with the easy access of technology at their fingertips and wanting to be connected all the time.

During recent GROW sessions, Kinnoull students have been learning about the importance of being mindful in their everyday movements, actions and interactions. By encouraging everyday mindfulness, students develop skills that assist in regulating their social, emotional and educational needs. According to recent research, (Maynard, B. 2017) when students practice mindfulness on a regular basis, they are more likely to feel calmer, focused and are better able to concentrate. During moments of stress, they are more likely to pause, relax, see things more clearly and make better decisions.

In a recent student focus group study conducted during the Internal Sport program (Yoga class), the physical, emotional and other wellbeing changes students noticed from practicing yoga and mindfulness were:

- Feeling more happy
- Recognising the simple things
- Admiring the small things in life
- Feeling lighter, relaxed and de-stressed
- Better equipped to handle stress and anxiety

With the Term 1 break upon us, students are encouraged to switch off, recharge and refresh. With the knowledge and skills learnt from their GROW sessions this Term, practicing mindfulness will hopefully assist each student to return from their holidays ready for Term 2.
