Maintain momentum by doing what makes you feel good.
Term 3 break is upon us and the smell of Spring is firmly in the air – what a wonderful time of the year. A sense of anticipation often resides with September (unless of course you’re a Carlton or Essendon supporter). For teachers and students alike it is a gateway to a well-earned holiday break.
It is, however, important to remember that it is only three quarter time. Plenty of teams capable of winning a game get over-run in the crucial final quarter. So, how do we sustain the motivation generated over the course of the year and capitalise on this momentum beyond the Term 3 break?
The answer might be a chemical one, dopamine. A feel-good chemical released by the brain when we show a passion for things. It is released when we meet challenges, interact with peers, exercise, laugh or even listen to music. Without the release of dopamine maintaining momentum and motivation can be extremely difficult.
I would encourage all parents and carers to ensure they provide adequate opportunity for the production of dopamine these holidays. Consider the best ways to provide your son access to exercise, good food, a healthy sleep routine and time to enjoy life.
This critical recharge of the batteries will provide a platform for your sons to experience an academically and emotionally successful Term 4.
