Year 11 Biology Excursion

On Friday 21 October, our Year 11 Biology classes explored real-world examples of animal adaptations at the Melbourne Zoo. The day began with a Zoo Teacher Workshop in which the students learned about the key adaptations of the Southern Corroboree Tree Frog and the bioethical considerations of developing captive breeding programs. Following this, students contributed to the Zoo’s understanding of butterfly behavior by conducting their own research in the Butterfly House. This data was collected by the Zoo and later used in class to explore some of the identified trends.

Staff and students had a wonderful time at the Zoo seeing the range of animals and experiencing curriculum come to life. This excursion gave students the opportunity to apply their learning about animal adaptations and gain deeper insight into the nature of science while practicing their scientific skills.
