WISE Wellness

At Year 9, one of the more fulfilling projects set within Discovery (HPE) is the WISE Wellness task. This task requires students to conduct a stocktake of their current wellbeing and then challenges them to make a sustained change to one specific element of their health.

Wellness goals must be S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely).
Essentially, Year 9 students are using themselves as the subject of some fascinating project-based learning. Students set questions like, “With regular aerobic training can I run a half marathon?” “What benefit will a cold shower in the morning have on my wellbeing?” “Can increasing my protein intake allow me to gain 3kgs?” “What is the optimal amount of sleep I should be getting?” “With regular flexibility training, how much can I increase my range of motion by?”

We all know that building healthy habits drive long term results. In time, students learn that that the concept of motivation follows action (not the other way around). Often when progress is seen, it encourages students to maintain this lifestyle change well beyond the 8-week project.

The Year 9 WISE Wellness program provides recognition of commitment, challenge and progressive improvement of self. To learn more about the WISE program facilitated within Discovery click here
