Reading is my Superpower

We take our reading seriously at De La Salle. In Term 1, students at Tiverton concentrate on making regular time for reading, finding what they like to read and finishing books. These are all skills and sometimes there is a presumption that students can just do these things independently.

Every English class begins with silent reading and every class from Years 5 to 9 visit the library for a full period once a cycle at least. Making time to read is key. Teachers choose different ways to get students to log their reading which makes them accountable for doing so.

In Term 1, library staff run a competition to encourage students to finish a book. Starting books is easy. Finishing books sometimes takes commitment. Also, a bit of competition drives things along.  Students are pushing to win as the term draws to a close. One class is declared the winner at each year group and winners will be announced early next term, but in fact every student is a winner if they have finished a book this term!

Reading is indeed a superpower! Activating the reading muscle makes all of us smarter.
