The Principal's Report

This week’s observance of Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the period before Holy Week and Easter where we are called to prayer and renewal during Lent. This liturgical season celebrates the life and passion of Jesus, with Lent providing an opportunity for building change and spiritual growth.

In his message for Lent 2023, Pope Francis encouraged Catholics to listen to what Jesus wants to tell them through the Scriptures and through others. “In addition to the Scriptures, the Lord speaks to us through our brothers and sisters, especially in the faces and the stories of those who are in need.”

I believe this is one of the enduring values of a contemporary Catholic education. Regardless of one’s depth and level of faith, understanding Gospel values and using them to support each other with respect, kindness, understanding and forgiveness is something to engage with in this Lenten period.

Last Friday we invested the 2023 College Leaders at our annual whole-school ceremony. In encouraging the leaders, I reminded them leadership can be challenging. It requires initiative, courage and wisdom, it requires resilience and flexibility when others don’t agree with your ideas, but most of all it requires vision, strategy and the capacity to build trust via positive relationships. In a world which is evolving and changing so rapidly, I asked our student leaders to employ our Lasallian ethos to guide, lead, and support their peers in issues, behaviours and attitudes so critical to being a responsible and influential citizen in 2023 and beyond.

De La Salle College students have for 110 years been known for unity, respect and being young men of character and empathy. I know our students today continue that tradition.

In recognising the 2022 academic high-achievers, I congratulated the students on their endeavour, persistence and hard work which they demonstrated as they earned their impressive scores.

It must be the goal of every student and staff member at De La Salle to make learning central to all we do. Continuing to improve our culture of learning must be our one focus above all others, where each and every student is engaged, supported and challenged to achieve his personal best.

Developing and building the skills our students need can only come with thinking about their learning, a focus on critical thinking, problem solving and risk-taking. These are themes you can expect to hear more about in 2023
