Feast of the Assumption

On 15 August the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this Feast, Catholics traditionally celebrate Mary going to heaven. The tradition is that ‘God took Mary, body and soul, to heaven after her life on earth had come to an end’.

The College marked this special Feast Day with a special liturgy in the Tiverton gym reminding us that Mary was a woman of deep faith, trust and service. And that she was chosen by God to bring Christ into the world. Mary is with Jesus at his birth, nurtures him in childhood, is present during his ministry, witnesses his death, and stands with the early Church as it grows and proclaims the Good News.

In the Gospel of Luke, Mary gives these words, which we call the Magnificat:

“My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me -
holy is his name.” (Luke 1:46-49)

Christ calls us to make this world a better place. Like Mary for her son Jesus, we are called to live a life of service to others. We should all look to Mary as a role model in our everyday life.

Staff Formation Day

The theme for our Staff Formation Day earlier this term was, “the heart of the matter.” The focus was on increasing our awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their contemporary experiences in anticipation of the referendum and how we, as a staff, might approach this through a Catholic Social Teaching lens. We were encouraged to reach beyond the reach of our own fingertips, to those places most people would prefer not to go and be in solidarity with those living on the peripheries.

Our guest presenter, Naomi Wolfe who led the day, is an Aboriginal Academic and Lecturer from the Faculty of Education and Arts at the Australian Catholic University. Her intention was to invite us as Lasallians, to be witnesses to a different way of living, to reach beyond what is familiar and comfortable and to be witnesses in a world of God’s justice through a love that is inclusive, where we aim for solidarity and a common good, where every single person is recognised and flourishing. And that the dignity of every person is the foundation and vision of a fully functioning and equal society.
