From the Principal

As Term 3 draws to a close, we have an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary breadth of College life and to recognise the generosity, energy and commitment of our students, staff and families. Across learning, faith, the arts, service, sport and community engagement, this term has demonstrated that education at De La Salle extends well beyond the classroom.

Our commitment to quality education was evident through our Academic Awards celebrations, VCE Information Night and Parent Student Teacher Interviews. These occasions recognised achievement, supported important decisions and enabled families and teachers to engage in meaningful conversations about each student’s learning, growth and aspirations. They also reinforced our vision of personal excellence: encouraging every young man to pursue his personal best, then ask, “What else can I do?”

The richness of our performing arts program was a significant feature of the term. Our regional music tour brought great joy to participating students, families and the communities visited. Closer to home, the College production of Puffs, our soirées and the VCE Music Recitals showcased the creativity, confidence and dedication of our students. These experiences required collaboration, resilience and many hours of preparation, both onstage and behind the scenes. I congratulate the students involved and sincerely thank the staff whose expertise and generosity made these opportunities possible.

Service was brought powerfully to life through the College’s involvement in Friday Night School at St Ignatius Church in Richmond. The sight of our students tutoring younger people from across Melbourne from refuge and marginalised backgrounds was a wonderful expression of faith, inclusion and concern for others. This weekly venture is now a permanent part of the De La Salle program.

Community connection remained at the heart of the term. The Readers’ and Writers’ Breakfast, Mothers’ Lunch, Year 11 Social, Year 7 Grandparents and Special Friends’ Morning, and Father’s Day Breakfast each strengthened the relationships that underpin a young person’s education. At the Father’s Day Breakfast, our Director of Sport, Melo Conti offered a moving reflection on belonging, presence and the ordinary actions through which young people come to know that they are safe, valued and loved.

We also celebrated our Year 10 Debating Team’s impressive finals campaign, along with numerous premierships in ACC sport. Although success is sometimes measured through results, these opportunities and experiences also develop courage, teamwork, disciplined preparation and the capacity to engage respectfully with others.

Thank you to our students for the manner in which they have embraced the term, to our families for their partnership and to our staff for their exceptional commitment. I wish every member of our community a safe, restful and enjoyable term break.
