Music – Your Questions Answered
At De La Salle College, music begins as a shared experience—and often becomes something much more. In Year 7, every student learns a musical instrument and joins an ensemble, whether they’ve played before or not. It’s a starting point, but not a limit. From there, students can explore everything from rock bands and vocal groups to full-scale musicals and regional tours. For those who continue, music becomes a creative outlet, a community, and a chance to perform, lead and grow. It’s not about being the best—it’s about being part of something bigger, and seeing where it takes you.
Luke Serrano, Director of Music: “Every Year 7 student learns a musical instrument through our Concert Band and Strings Program. It’s a practical and inclusive way to help them discover their interests. From there, they can join concert bands, vocal groups, rock bands—you name it. Every student is encouraged to try something—and often they surprise themselves with where it leads.”
Oliver, Music Student: “I didn’t expect to end up loving the clarinet! I always thought I’d try saxophone, but then I picked up the clarinet and just kept going. Now I play in ensembles, take lessons, and even performed in the Junior Musical last year.”
Luke Serrano: “One of our greatest strengths is how supportive the environment is. Students are guided by experienced teachers who focus on performance, technique, and confidence. It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress.”
Oliver: “The teachers here are really encouraging. They help you improve your skills, but also how to perform, work in a group, and try new things.”
Luke Serrano: “We hold three major concerts each year—Autumn, Winter, and Christmas—plus performances at Masses, school events, and community functions. Students can also join our regional Music Tour and play in the senior musical orchestra. It’s a vibrant calendar that gives students real-world experience and joy.”
Oliver: “Performing in The Lorax was amazing. I loved being part of something bigger, especially with students from other schools. I’m really looking forward to this year’s production—it’s fun and challenging.”
Luke Serrano: “Students can continue into VCE Music, and we provide mentoring from industry professionals. Whether they’re aiming for tertiary study or simply enjoy performing, we support them every step of the way.”
Luke Serrano: “We offer private tuition across a wide range of instruments. Lessons are tailored to complement classroom learning and ensemble performance, helping students build skills and confidence at their own pace.”
Luke Serrano: “We have 15 leadership roles, including Music Captain and Ensemble Captains. Students can also join our Tech Crew, managing live sound and stage production. Some discover their passion behind the scenes—it’s all part of broadening their experience.”
Oliver: “I like that you can do different things—play, sing, perform, or work backstage. And you don’t have to give up other interests either. I play sport as well as music, and the school helps me balance both.”
Luke Serrano: “Music teaches more than notes. Discipline, teamwork, creative thinking, leadership—these skills carry into every area of life. Watching a student perform their first concert and later lead an ensemble is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”
Oliver: “Music has helped me work with others, and try things I wouldn’t have before. I’m in Year 8 and I can see there is a lot to look forward to.”
